The Corinium Racketeers v The Eggheads
.
The Corinium Racketeers, took on the quiz might of the Eggheads on the BBC2 show… and lost. In a programme recorded last year and shown on Monday night, the team put on an excellent performance but missed out on the £19,000 prize money because they didn’t know which actress Richard Dawkins is married to (it’s Lalla Ward). “We all really enjoyed it, though, and were pleased that Jeremy Vine said that we know a lot!”.
The full team were Kevin Snowball, Carol Lamble, Ken Shortridge, Graham Ellor, Ro Lyon and Jane Franklin.
Tickets are £12.50 per person, reserve your place with Midge Wellfair: 01285 770864

Victorious F team celebrate their promotion…
…with a cup of coffee at Waitrose after the team picture! The ladies F team won division 6A in the summer league, Paul Harris collected the trophy on their behalf at the G.L.T.A Annual General Meeting a couple of weeks ago. A great team effort, many of the players hadn’t played league matches before. In the photo from the left Kate Crook, Diane Horsall, Captain Kate Henwood, Julie Buck, Paula Reardon and Marjory Jarvis.
Gloucestershire Tennis Club of the Year – this is why we won!
The G.L.T.A. Club of the Year Award is given to the club who have made the most significant step forward with their club and programme over the past twelve months. Cirencester has had a big impact on getting more people in its local community to pick up a racket and get involved with tennis.
This year has seen them succeeding in almost all its targets under its chairman Paul Harris who was appointed in 2010 and who has steered the club committee in a new and successful direction.
The club’s major achievements for the last 12 months have been:
• Clubmark status
• The appointment of a new Coach Adam Swan – in the first year Adam and the committee have developed coaching programmes for all members. With Adam’s infectious enthusiasm the standard of play within the club has risen at all levels.
• Improved communication with members – by redesigning the club website, setting up regular emails and twitter.
• Improved links with local schools – the more young people they can get interested in tennis the more members they will get, the new membership might have a hidden champion!
• The encouragement of members to participate in the Gloucestershire league – there are 11 summer and 6 winter teams and this will improve the clubs standard of players and sense of achievement.
These are just some of the achievements that have come about because of the enthusiasm of the clubs committee who have made it buzz with its coaching, club sessions, roll-ups, fundays, team practices, tournaments and not least social events.
When Paul Harris (Top Dog) received the award and a cheque for £500 at Oxtalls Tennis Centre he said,
“We’ve had a fantastic year, and everyone has played their part. In the end it’s really just about remembering, it’s a members’ club.”
.
We’re looking for members who would like to help with the club, just a little bit. The club house needs a bit of TLC, if you can spare a bit of time sign up for a month or just two weeks if you prefer.
.
What’s involved…
• Sweep and mop the floor
• Empty bins
• Wash up and tidy around the sink and clean tea towels
• Empty the fridge
• General tidy up
.
Please sign up in the clubhouse – or email George
Thanks to all the people who have signed up already!
Annually the chairman’s gets the opportunity to present an award to a member of the club. Nominations come from members and there were many potential candidates. All club members can win the award with the exception of the Chairman and the Coach.
I chose to share the award between two people who have greatly improved the ‘communication’ side of the club. Both their contributions would have won the award in other years so it seemed unreasonable to overlook either of them.
Hugh took on the additional role of membership in February and adapted the existing set up so that club communication and membership updates became much simpler and clearer for everyone.
Katie has effectively developed the ‘Ciren Tennis’ brand through marketing, posters and our new website. This has been exceptional and a big draw for club members. The twitter feed provides easy and regular communication for all.
In addition to the winners Adrian Potter, George Brooks, Midge Wellfair, Elaine Howell were all nominated, and their significant contribution to the club should also be recognised.
Congratulations!
Paul Harris, Chairman
KEEP PLAYING AND PARTY ON – the snaps!
Over 80 members and friends enjoyed the annual dinner dance at the Stratton House Hotel on Saturday 12th November. Dee, Midge and a fantastic team of helpers organized the event and the room was beautifully decorated to create a party atmosphere. There was good food, then speeches by Paul and Adam followed by great entertainment from the Slammerz. Sorry about the tables names!
Roll-up tournament results…
.
The winners were Pat Peters for the ladies with 23 points, and Mike Barnes for the men with 24 points. Congratulations! A big thank you to Midge, Dee and Graham who made the event a great success.
Summer Sunday Funday – what a fab day!
.
Well done to Gilly Sharp and Nigel Magson who won the Lucky Dip Mixed doubles. Soccer tennis brought more success for the family Magson – Tristan, Elliot and Nathalie were champions! George took some great pictures of the Frying Pan Challenge, to see them all click here
WE DID IT!
Cirencester Tennis Club has been awarded Clubmark Status by the Lawn Tennis Association.
Tennis Clubmark was launched by the LTA as a way of recognising those clubs which deliver best practice in their on court programmes and off court policies and procedures. It is a prestigious standard to reach in all areas – particularly those areas involving youngsters, such as child protection – as well as in coaching and good management.
This single National Standard involves hard work and commitment from all involved in those running the club, and Cirencester is delighted to have achieved the accreditation.
Joe Morris, Tennis Development Manager for the Gloucestershire LTA, made the presentation to Club Chairman Paul Harris.
“This is a highly regarded accreditation and reflects the quality of the coaching and facilities at Cirencester,” he said. “I look forward to seeing the club strengthen its position in the area even further with this national recognition.”
Jackie Tarleton and Elaine Holwell worked very hard to make this happen.
